Bath Christmas Market A Very British Festive Treat

Traditional Hot chestnuts stall

On a rather cold Sunday in early December we decided to pay a visit to the historic Roman city of Bath.

Being just an hours drive from us we often venture to this very civilised slice of Somerset but were drawn on this particular weekend by the annual Bath Christmas Market.

The award winning Bath Christmas Market runs every year in the historic city and is set-up in darling wooden huts around the beautiful Bath Abbey and the Roman Thermal Baths, from which the city takes it’s name . There are around 170 “huts” with a wide-ranging assortment of artisan foods, drinks, gifts and more. Quite literally something for everyone.

You can come and most certainly get your Christmas shopping completed or just stock up on festive treats for the season ahead.

We lost ourselves for several hours perusing all the delights. One of the highlights, and a personal favourite of mine is that most of the vendors offer free samples of virtually everything. You can eat and drink your way around this market in one festive feast!

I never knew my affection for honey wine until this day!

Christmas traditions are kept alive and the smell of hot roasted chestnuts hangs thick in the cold air.

I opted for something a little less traditional but just as delicious! All we needed was something to wash it down with.

Vintage mulled wine

Hey presto! We didn’t have to look too far.

Once our christmas cockles were thoroughly warmed with a vat of mulled wine we continued on our adventure and meandered about the cobble stoned paths of the market.

There is so much to see and to take in. Beautiful aromas fill the air and music comes from every corner to serenade you around the market.

Once you have been to the market and sampled all the delights, you can continue your adventures by heading to the array of independent boutiques as well as well known high-street shops that Bath has to offer.

Bath is one of my favourite places to visit. The beautiful Georgian architecture is abundant and inspiring. For a view of some of the best of it, head to the Royal crescent or the Circus- originally called the King’s Circus. The town itself overflows with beautiful examples of the period and all new buildings have to be built to strict guidelines using Bath stone, to preserve the beauty and integrity of this historic city.

You must also visit the beautiful Roman Baths for which the city is most famous for and the newer Thermae Bath spa where you can enjoy a dip in the thermal waters.

There is of course the delightful Pump Room, where one can indulge in a little Georgian gentility that is also a British institution; Afternoon Tea.

If you’re wanting to make your stay a little longer (and why wouldn’t you) you can opt for any of these lovely places to stay:

The Royal Crescent Hotel
The Gainsborough
Bath Spa Hotel

These delightful Bed and Breakfasts are in the heart of the city:

The Bath House
One Three Nine
Three Abbey Green

Or why not immerse yourself in the city and rent a fabulous three storey Georgian townhouse:

Once we had shopped ourselves out we headed to one of my favourite coffee shops Cafe Lucca on Bartlett Street. This delightful space is attached to The Loft, a gorgeous design led retail space where a beautifully curated collection of home and fashion items can be found. I love a bit of multi-tasking.

The design of the building owes much to it’s Georgian heritage, but none the less, it’s modern update is sympathetic and makes the most of the beautiful high ceilings and original features.

Deciding on which of the may delectable cakes to have was the biggest hurdle of the day. But I overcame it, I’m no quitter after all!

We bid our farewells to the beautiful City of Bath having had a thoroughly festive treat, and promised to be back very soon.

Let me know if you pay a visit.
