DHC Astaxanthin collagen all-in-one gel; skincare review

DHC Astaxanthin all-in-one collagen gel

Every now and then a product comes along that makes you sit up and pay attention. DHC Astaxanthin collagen all-in-one gel has done just this.

Astaxathin collagen all-in-one gel

I kindly received this product to test in October last year and now, several months in, I haven’t looked back.

The beauty industry is saturated with good, often great products, and so to stand out in this fiercely competitive industry is quite some feat. For me the Astaxanthin gel from DHC has really stood head and shoulders above the rest in 2017. And now, well into 2018, it is still holding it’s own.

You are getting plenty of bang for your buck with a very generous 124g tub of product, which comes in beautifully opulent rust red and gold packaging . It looks very high end.

The all-in-one gel has more of a cream appearance and the texture is somewhere in between a cream and a gel.  It’s quite delightful. It is a light whipped texture that is very easily absorbed into my skin. There is no sticky residue which I am always pleased of in a product.

It also has an intriguing but delightful pink hue, which is all down to the active ingredient and namesake, Astaxanthin.

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid and is a powerful ‘super’ antioxidant. So powerful in fact, it has 6000 times the power of Vitamin C. Let that sink in for a moment… 6000 times!

Ok now thats sunk in,  back to the delightful pink hue I mentioned, Asaxanthin the wonder ingredient, is in fact a type of algae which gives it this natural colour. Another example of this natural colour is amongst flamingos, these birds feast on this algae and owe their iconic ice-cream parlour pink tones to the natural wonder that is Asaxanthin. All natural and all beautifying.

The only initial surprise (and temporary) draw back for me was the smell- it doesn’t have one. It is plain, which I found quite off putting at first. We are wowed and wooed in equal measure buy the beauty industry with often artificial fragrances and so have become accustomed to our products smelling as good as they perform. I was quite taken aback when I first used the gel, but I quickly became used to it, and with the immediate results, all was most certainly forgiven.

In fact this is something that DHC as a brand stand by. All products are fragrance-free. Not only that, they boast being colourant and parabeen free. Its all good.

So, does it actually work? Absolutely, yes.

Ive been using this gel/cream for several months now and Ive been really impressed with the results. Instantly I noticed that my skin appeared more hydrated, the fine lines I have on my head were less visible and have continued to improve over time. This will be thanks to a powerhouse of ingredients including hyarulonic acid, firming collagen and elastin.

My skin distinctly looked brighter immediately after using this gel/cream. Probably thanks to that 6000 fold vitamin C dose! And happily the results continue. I’m not sure about you but often I find that when I have been using a product for a while the shine can sometimes ‘wear off’. Not with this product. I’m as happy now as I was when I first started using it, with no signs of the great results waining.

I use it in the mornings and sometimes in the evenings too. After cleansing I apply about a 5p size amount with my fingertips and pat it into my skin. As I said it absorbs quickly and I am able to put my makeup on soon afterwards, probably around 5 minutes. My makeup always sits nicely whether I wear a primer or not, and I put this down to the improvement in my overall skin condition.

I have sensitive, dehydrated skin. I also suffer with rosacea on my cheeks so redness and texture is an issue. I have used this on my areas of rosacea with no issue and this is thanks to DHC products being suitable for sensitive skin types.

At £40 for a generous 124g tub I can easily recommend this product to you. If you are looking for a lightweight but deeply nourishing product that will brighten, hydrate, and firm your skin, you need look no further.
